Another area where my arrogance and ignorance abounded was the idea of “journaling for clarity.” Frankly, journaling seemed so dumb and silly to me.
Journaling. Cue the scoff with an accompanying eyeroll.
It just sounded weak to me. I could never get behind why people journaled.
I always thought journaling was for the meek, hopeless romantics who would sit under the shade of a willow tree embracing a cool day’s breeze while writing about deep thoughts beyond what my knuckle-dragging self could conjure.
Not. At. All.
Journaling has proven to be a super outlet for me and I’m so grateful that I LET myself actually discover and embrace it.
I had come across a quote by Flannery O’Connor that said “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” I liked that a lot and it inspired me to give this whole journaling thing a try. I’m so glad I did.
Keep in mind, journaling isn’t about a constant revelation of deep-down secrets, or forehead-slapping eureka moments nor is it even about “feelings” at all. Journaling shouldn’t even be viewed as a daily requirement.
Journal when you feel the need.
Journal when you need to think through thoughts.
Journal about this time last year…
Whatever. Just embrace the idea of journaling.
I personally like to journal off prompts: questions that prompt my journal entry.
